How NTA exam registration works in India

Find the right NTA examination portal, understand the information bulletin, submit your form and distinguish payment from confirmation.

NTA exam registration starts with the official page for the particular examination and application cycle. Read its information bulletin, create or access the required account, complete the application, upload the requested files, follow the payment instructions and obtain the confirmation specified for that exam. There is no single form that registers you for every examination conducted by the National Testing Agency.

The important details come from the exam’s current bulletin and notices. A photograph rule, correction option or payment procedure from another NTA examination may not apply to yours. Use the examination name and year together whenever you search, save a file or contact support.

Find the exam through NTA’s own website

Start at the National Testing Agency website and follow the relevant examination link. This is safer than choosing a sponsored result, an old bookmarked application page or a link forwarded without context. An official portal can use a different hostname from the main NTA website, so the connection from NTA’s own page matters.

Confirm the examination, level and cycle when the application page opens. Undergraduate and postgraduate versions of a test are not interchangeable. A portal may also keep information from an earlier cycle visible after that cycle has closed.

If you are helping a family member, open the same official notice together and agree which examination they need. Similar abbreviations can hide very different admission routes. Registering successfully for the wrong test does not solve the original admission requirement.

Read the bulletin before entering personal details

The information bulletin is the examination’s main instruction document. Find the parts covering eligibility, application steps, documents, subject or paper choices, fees, examination arrangements and support. Then read any later notices that change those instructions.

Pay special attention to decisions that affect eligibility or the test you will take. A subject choice should follow the requirements of the course and institution you want, where relevant. Do not select a paper simply because a friend chose it or because it appears first in a list.

A useful way to read a long bulletin is to identify the decisions you must make before starting the form. For example: which qualification details are needed, which subjects you intend to choose, what identity document is accepted and whether you need supporting evidence for a category claim. This avoids reaching the final screen with an unresolved decision.

Use contact details you can keep accessing

An email address or mobile number used during registration may be needed for verification, messages or account recovery. Use details you can access throughout the application and examination process. If you use a shared family number, understand who will receive messages and keep the applicant’s records clearly separated.

Enter identity information from the relevant documents rather than from memory. Check spelling, date of birth and any document number before requesting a verification code. A successful verification code confirms access to a contact channel; it does not prove that every personal detail in the application is correct.

Keep the application number and account access information securely. An application number, a password and a one-time code do different jobs. Never give an unsolicited caller a code or let an agent take permanent control of the email account used for the application.

Prepare uploads for this exam’s requirements

Read the stated file type, size and image requirements beside each upload field. Different fields may require different files. A photograph, signature and certificate should not all be processed as if they were the same kind of image.

Open the final file before uploading it. Check that it is readable, correctly oriented and complete. A document can meet the size limit while becoming too blurred to use. A scan can also be clear but missing a second page or an important edge.

Avoid editing the facts shown on a document. Reducing file size or correcting page rotation is different from changing a name, date, category or result. If the underlying document is wrong, use the responsible authority’s correction procedure. Our document upload guide explains how to solve common file problems without changing the record itself.

Review choices before final submission

The form may allow you to save progress and return later. That is useful, but a saved draft is not a completed application. Before final submission, read the full preview and compare important fields with your documents and intended course requirements.

Watch for fields selected automatically or retained from an earlier attempt. A city, language, subject combination or category that looks familiar may still be wrong for this application. If someone is typing for you, ask to read the preview yourself before authorising submission.

Do not rely on a future correction window as a safety net. NTA publishes exam-specific correction notices, and those notices can limit which fields are editable. A field you can change in one examination or cycle may be locked in another. The best time to catch an avoidable mistake is before the final submission.

Understand payment and confirmation separately

Follow the payment route provided by the official application. A bank debit, payment receipt and confirmed application are related but different records. After paying, return to the application and check the result required by the current bulletin.

For instance, an earlier CUET bulletin discussed what to do when a confirmation page was not generated after payment. That illustrates why exam-specific instructions matter; it is not a reason to repeat that old payment procedure for every present-day NTA examination. Use the current portal’s instructions for your own transaction.

If the bank shows a debit but the application still shows unpaid or incomplete, record the application number, payment reference, amount and time. Read the official waiting or reconciliation instructions before paying again. Repeated payments made in panic can leave you managing both an incomplete form and duplicate debits.

Keep the evidence that shows completion

Save the final confirmation page or other completion record specified by the examination. Keep it with the payment receipt and the bulletin you followed. A screenshot of a filled form before submission does not establish that NTA received a completed application.

Check that the saved record is for the correct examination cycle and applicant. Families applying for more than one student should use clear filenames so a receipt or confirmation is not accidentally attached to the wrong person’s support request.

You may later need to retrieve documents or read an application update from the same account. Keep access available after the first confirmation. Registering for an examination is only one stage; an examination-city notice, admit card, result and any institution-level admission steps are separate events with their own instructions.

Follow notices that apply to your exact situation

Use NTA’s notices and the examination page to check changes. The notice archive is useful when you need to locate a document, but its presence in the archive does not mean an old application or correction window is open today.

Read a notice’s title, publication date, examination cycle and any annexure. A short headline may announce an extension or correction opportunity while the attached document explains the conditions. Save the full notice that affects your application instead of relying on a cropped social-media image.

For an error after submission, see our guide to NTA application corrections. It explains how to work out whether the current correction window actually covers the field you need to change.

Ask for help with the right evidence

Use the contact route shown in the current examination bulletin or portal. State the exam name and cycle, application number, affected step and exact error. Include a payment reference when the issue concerns a transaction, but do not send a password or one-time verification code.

A clear request might explain that the application was submitted, a payment reference exists, and the confirmation page is missing. That is more useful than saying only that the website “does not work”. Keep a copy of the request and any reply.

The practical goal is to leave the process with three things clear: the correct application has been submitted, its required payment position is resolved, and you have the official completion record. From there, follow the next examination notice rather than assuming registration also completes admission to an institution.
